In a process for recovering ferro alloys from ores or oxides by reduction with hydrogen or carbon, the ore is ground for a predetermined time in order to give maximum reactivity, mixed with an alkali metal or alkaline earth metal salt (e.g. KF or K2CO3) catalyst, briquetted with or without carbon and then reduced under reduced pressure to give the alloy powder which is separated from the gangue after cooling and comminution. The carbon content of the reduced alloy may be lowered by mixing the product of the reduction with Fe2O3 or Cr2O3 adding 0.1% KF, briquetting and then heating at 1200 DEG C-1300 DEG C under reduced pressure.
